WOW! Great game by both teams and some stellar goaltending at both ends of the floor. In an epic see saw battle the Thistles and Wild duke it out the home team took game 1 and lead the best of 5 series 1-0.
The visitors got on the board first in this one but the Wild were quick to answer. Sitting at 1-1 the defence and goaltending took over at both ends and the score remained 1-1 after 20 minutes of play. The Wild lone goal scorer was Cody Hudson.
The second period saw the Thistles come out strong and score the first two goals of the period only to have the Wild rattle off 4 straight to take their first lead of the game at 5-3. Fergus would answer with two of their own and we were back to even steven. The teams would exchange goals again and would go to the locker room no further ahead at 6-6 after 40 minutes. Wild goal scorers in the middle stanza were Kent Radbourne (2), Sam Dramnitzke (2) and Tyler Verutis.
The third period lived up to it's billing as both teams were vibrating entering the floor. The Wild would notch one first only to have the Thistles pot two of their own to take the lead. The Wild would answer with a pair to regain the advantage and we were at 9-8 with 3 minutes to go. The Wild defence and tending was strong but the Fergus squad was able to squeek one past Andrew Chenier and we were sqaured up at 9's. This one would need OT. Third period goal scoreres were Verutis and Tyler Nagy (2).
Now, who doens't like overtime? (me) In an intense, non sudden death overtime period, there was lots of action and lots of great plays. Both goaltenders were stellar and only one got by to give the Wild the win.Hayden Berger gets his first of the game just 2.5 minutes into the period and the Wild defence were able to hold a very potent Thistles offence.
The Wild take the victory10-9 and take a 1-0 series lead heading into game 2 on Friday night in Elora. Congrats to the Wildmen on their victory but there is still a tonne of lacrosse left to go.
